After trying to get proactive forest practices applied on private forest land in the NE USA for 50 years, I have realized that forests are true infrastructure assets rather than investment grade profit centers and that the currency and credit creation system in this country and soon the whole world is structured to enforce the current short term thinking that has brought us to the current state of energy and environmental conditions. In other words forestry is not bankable! The only thing that will sell in today’s financial structure is quick extraction and liquidation of the assets to some entity close to cheap money. Non-bank interests have no chance to make proactive investments and survive without massive and regular excess discretionary income. This condition is not sustainable.

It is imperative that new dedicated practitioners not get sucked into this impossible situation. Something like this conference needs to focus on the nature of forest production and the needs for regular upkeep of forest properties. The realities of climate change and the need to engage in much more local and efficient combined heat and power generation from residuals after a careful improvement cut or normal thinning will require a much more local work force with less mechanization and much more care. Large scale harvesting systems require massive amounts of material to justify the movement of the equipment and are not feasible when coupled with very local energy production. The website, http://sites/google.com/commongoodforestry, was set up to aid in this discussion and is a work in progress. Feel free to comment.
